Most conservatories in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire were built with a polycarbonate or glass roof. They look fine on day one. Over the years, though, they become a drain on your heating bills in winter and could be mistaken for a greenhouse in summer. The glare from the sun can be almost blinding, and rain on polycarbonate is noisy. Your problems aren't unique. Every Nu-Look customer has had the same issues, and there's one very simple solution: a Nu-Look insulated tiled roof.
Why polycarbonate and glass roofs struggle
A typical polycarbonate roof provides up to 8 times less insulation than a Nu-Look roof, and a glass roof up to 6 times less. A typical conservatory roof has a U-value of around 1.7 W/m²K. A Nu-Look roof brings it down to 0.14 W/m²K, the same insulation value as any other room in your home.
Why not just fit blinds?
Roof blinds are designed to reduce glare, not to insulate. They let solar heat straight in and do nothing to stop heat escaping in winter. A properly insulated solid roof is what prevents the summer heat build-up and the winter cold.
What happens on installation
After your existing glass or polycarbonate roof is removed, the installation team builds a timber structure, cutting every piece on site. Several layers of insulation go in, and the roof is finished with insulated plasterboard ready to be skimmed. Lightweight Tapco tiles go on top, at only about 12kg per square metre once installed. The initial build usually takes 3 to 5 days. In the vast majority of cases the work is fully complete within 2 weeks, including plastering and electrics.
Will I lose light?
On average only a little: around 5% when replacing a polycarbonate roof and around 11% for glass. Most light comes in through the doors and windows, and it reflects off the new ceiling with less glare. You can also add Velux windows.
